Creating an Optimized Product Page is critical when building a website that search engines will index and index well. Here are some tips I have found to be helpful in getting product pages listed well.
I'll start out with the Meta fields Meta Title and Meta Description. Both are very important to getting a high listing in all the major search engines, including Google, MSN and Yahoo.
Keyword Note: When trying to decide what keywords are most important, use the Google tools to help locate keywords people actually search for.
Writing Note: All text that you put on your website should be grammatically correct and spelled correctly. It's rare that you would ever want to misspell a word your customers will be reading. Please consider this to be the case for all my notes below.
Meta Title - Should be short and sweet and to the point but also include the major keywords. If it's a brand named item, include the brand and the item # and in some cases the UPC. Include the primary words that people will use to search for the item.
Meta Description - Apply my notes on Meta Title here but the description can be 2 or 3 short sentences. Broaden out your keywords a little and make sure you use good grammar.
Page File Name - I'm not really sure how much the search engines pay attention to the name of the page but I can't help but think that it's at least a small part of the equation. With this in mind, give your page a short name that includes the most important keywords for this page. There are a couple of different directions to go with this. It really depends on what keywords you are focusing on. For my money, if the product on my web page is "Strawberry Address Labels" I'm going to name my page strawberry-address-labels.htm.
Now let's switch to the body of your page. There are several factors that the search engines will look at to help decide how to index your page. I suspect each search engine has it's own formula but in general, my notes below should be good for all the search engines. All the way at the bottom is a sample of how all this might look. Click Here for a direct link to the page I used as the sample. If the sample does not follow my notes exactly, it's for two reasons. The first is that the first thing everybody does it breaks the rules. The second is that we are in the process of updating our website to match these rules.
Category Path - This is the menu path the customer may of used to get to your product page. In our case we don't have a deep menu structure. If you use our software to edit your website, we can put this on your page for you. Using this feature will help you get more keywords on your site and will help your customers navigate.
Product Name - In this case "Strawberry Labels". May often times be the same, or similar to your Meta Title.
